As I've been reflecting, I realized another key party in my moving to a choice based curriculum. During my masters courses I needed to choose a topic of study for my action research project. At this point I had made some observations with my elementary students during free choice time. They were creating amazing things without me designing a project for them. In my masters courses I was reading about constructivism. Constructivism seemed to be a way I could allow my students more freedom, and this freedom would likely improve motivation and creativity, but would they learn as much? Everyone would like to be able to do whatever they want, but would it be rigorous? I was optimistic, but had my doubts.
